After a judge last year halted a provision that would have blocked Planned Parenthood affiliates in North Carolina from receiving state funds, Republican legislators are attempting to defund the women’s health organization again. Last week, a House subcommittee approved a spending plan that would stop the Department of Health and Human Services from funding family planning and pregnancy prevention efforts outside of local health departments. Officials said the proposal would take $343,000 away from Planned Parenthood clinics. “Forcing them to go to an already overburdened health department is just playing politics with women’s health and it doesn’t save the state a dime,” said Paige Johnson, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina vice president. The state House is expected to vote on the budget this week.
