The Cranky Knitter, March 27, 2012
I recently joined the group Government Free VJJ. This is a group of people (mostly women, but some men, too!) that are making uteri and vaginas and sending them to male lawmakers with the basic message of “stay out of my uterus!” This started as a group of knitters and crocheters, but now people who are crafty in other ways have joined and are posting patterns for other crafts.
Below is the letter I plan to send with my knitted lady parts. Please tell me if you think I should add something or make some changes. And feel free to use my letter to send with your lady parts!
Dear (Big Brother Government),
There are three people in the world that have the right to have any input into my reproductive system. In order of importance these people are: ME, my husband and my obgyn. But please understand that while I may look to my husband and doctor for advice and support, I am the only person who has the right to make a decision about my body because I am the one who has to live with the consequences of that decision.
You want to come into my doctor’s office and my bedroom all in the name of “personhood,” but I ask you, where does it end? By telling me I don’t have the right to access birth control or abortion services, you are taking liberties with my person. By telling me that I don’t have the right to make decisions about my body, you are taking liberties with my freedom. By supporting these anti-women initiatives, you are saying that we are not all equal, that women are not capable of making important decisions about their bodies and their lives. By supporting these anti-women initiatives, you are saying that the government should have control over the most intimate aspects of its citizens’ lives. Well, I am not a child and I am capable of making an intelligent and informed decision about my healthcare and my private life without any help from you.
This is not about being a Republican or Democrat, of which I am neither, this is about standing up to a government that so blatantly hates women. This is about fighting for the right to control my life without interference from a government that doesn’t know or care about me. I am frightened at the direction this country is headed because I believe that these anti-women initiatives are just one more way for the government to chip away at my rights as a citizen of a free country. Everyone in this country deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and if you can’t see how these anti-women initiatives that you so ardently support infringe on these basic human rights, then I pity you because you can’t see how what you are doing harms the people you pledged to help and protect.
In light of your incomprehensible need to control my reproductive system, please accept this gift of a knitted uterus and vagina. As you so desperately desire, they are virginal, unsullied by any sexual contact and tied up with a pretty white ribbon. Now that you have one of your own, stop trying to dick around with mine.
Sincerely,
A Very Angry Voter
